.

The PM was told a bizarre story about a meezer and we were wondering if any of you cats had ever heard of such things. Maybe some of you need such treatment. Inquiring minds want to know.

Ok, a friend of the PM's was visiting with someone who had a meezer.  They went into the kitchen and there was the cat. The friend reached down and pet the cat a couple of times, gently and then had to lift his leg up quickly to defend himself as he was about to have 12 lbs of irate  kitty wreak havoc on his body.  The woman screamed for her cat to get down then grabbed him and sat down on the couch.  (the cat not the man, hee hee)

She then proceeded to put him on his back and rub his tummy until he calmed down.  While she was doing this, this is the crazy part, she held a pencil between his teeth. I guess the wood was flying, bits going all over the place. He chewed for a few minutes then was calm again.  She apologized and said he had quite a temper and that was the only way to calm him.

The PM thought this was the craziest thing she had ever heard.  Has anyone heard of such things?  Maybe it is some new Dr. Phil for cats technique. I think we live a sheltered life out here in the woods.

Whatcha think?

UPDATE~ I put this question to  George and he has an answer. You can go over and check out what he thinks! Thanks George!!

Wow - that sounds really weird! Chewing on a pencil can't be terribly healthy either! Very strange.

That's a strange story indeed. Sorry we can't help with the answer. Will check the comments again later to see if someone did.

Well, Shade... A pencil is better than a finger, by the sounds of it!
You know kitties each have their own personalities, and maybe conventional methods are not effective and only this way can he be stopped from running amok.
Curiously shocking no doubt, pls calm ur mommie down. :)

Hi Goldie

That sounds as if the meezer was being territorial or jealous towards the visitor. A nurse at our v-e-t once told us about meezers she has had, having jealousy tantrums and trashing things when a bout of gnashing and ripping has been interrupted.

I bet George Online cat would be able to tell you exactly what going on there with the meezer. He is a behaviour consultant cat and is very wise. He has a note on his blog inviting cats to write in with questions.

His link is:

Write in and ask him!

My goodness, that cat wanted to get the lead out in more ways than one...

Dennis thinks whatever calms a cat is good--pencil wood is not going to harm--it would take a lot to chew thru wood to lead, and the human probably throws the chewed up pencils away and keeps fresh ones at hand. It's not the same as giving a cat lead paint chips to chew on. -- I'm sure the cat is OK.

Dennis has heard of singing to cats to calm some of them--a certain song. or a favorite old toy brought out only at times of crisis.

Dennis is very sad today because Precious the Cat is asleep and won't wake up. her family is very very sad. Precious was very pretty.

Her wonderful and funny life story is on this blog

That's a strange one all right - sounds like the kitty needs a little anger management!

Wow. That meezer sounds like he has some serious issues, poor guy. I've never heard of that before . . .

Hmm, that seems a little bit strange to me! A little Feliway, perhaps? ;-)

That does sound very strange! My Mommie has had two Meezer cats many years ago, and neither of them ever did anything like that.

Wow what an interesting story and strange behavior. Our new meezer gets very angry... He starts biting our legs and arms. I am trying the water spray method to break him out of this habit. I hope things will calm down with him soon. Thanks for writing to us, I'm going to check out that George's blog to see if he has some ideas.

Mom sez dat one of her favorite ways to calm down a shelter cat that is upset is to place it tummy up one her knees and blow on der tummy! Gess whatever works is good. Oh, dey don't put lead in pencils, it's graphite...just so yoo know and can stop worrying dat she was gonna poison her kitty.

Some cats don't mind being deliberately placed on their backs and if that one doesn't mind, that's fine. As for the pencil chewing, it sounds like a way to release aggression. Anything in the mouth would work as well and something like a rubber toy would be better than a pencil.

Maybe it was part beaver.

Very, very, strange. It's good that the bean is trying to find ways to calm the kitty.

I would think you would only do that if you wanted to give your kitty lead poisoning! I don't think that's a good thing at all.

Bailey, is a Siamese Snowshoe. He LOVES to have his tummy rubbed. But last week we found fleas (he's an indoor cat -- got them through the screen door I think) So I started combing his tummy and he goes frantic -- doesn't try to get away but acts like he has to chew on something compulsively, really nibbling hard. At first it was my arm then I quickly diverted that to his own paws. It's something like when you tickle a child until he collapses. (Not that I recommend that.)

That meezer sounds like one tough hombre - although his person obviously loves him heaps and looks out for him. No answers here, just a lot of respect (from a safe distance of course).
